Exec Board Perspectives...Ashley Fox

Hey everyone!
My name is Ashley Fox and I’m on the Executive Board for Dance Marathon Georgetown College (DMGC). I want to share why I got involved with dance marathon and some of the awesome things that are currently going on with DMGC.
The summer before I came to Georgetown I spent some time at Shriners Hospital for Children in Lexington. I visited the hospital with a group who threw a party for the children who were currently living in the building. While playing games and serving food, I met a boy that was about the same age as me. At the time, I was 17 and loved being able to drive and to go out with my friends whenever I wanted. The boy I met was just a year younger and he was bedridden due to his illness. It hit me that he couldn’t enjoy any of the things that a normal teenager should be able to experience. While I could walk out of the hospital and go to a movie or out to eat, he had to stay in his bed, secluded from the outside world. His situation really touched me and made me want to help kids who were like him. As a result, I knew that I wanted to be a part of dance marathon when I first learned about it as a freshman. I knew that DMGC would be one way to raise money for medical care for children like those at Shriners Hospital.
Currently, DMGC is up and running and we can’t wait for our next event. We currently are working on various fundraisers to raise money not only for our event in the spring, but also for the Children’s Miracle Network. This past weekend we had a soccer tournament in which 5 teams participated. Each team paid a $20 fee to play. Jose Baeza and his team members won the tournament and they were given coupons for Bruster’s and other prizes. In addition, I’ve been working with Clear Channel Radio, which is located in Lexington. DMGC is currently up on all of the websites for their radio stations and hopefully it will be mentioned on air. So tune in!!!
If anyone would like to get involved with DMGC, there are still positions available on the Executive Board. We would love to read your applications! Also, we’re looking for people who have special talents to come see us so that they can share their amazing abilities at dance marathon. Lastly, register!!! Registration is only $20 right now and you’ll get a t-shirt!

When planning for March start in....June?

Hello again!

The 2011-2012 Exec Board has been hard at work over the past few months preparing for Round 2 on March 30th. A few highlights of our most recent activity:

Summer: Lauren and Katie attend Dance Marathon Leadership Conference in Oklahoma City where they learned some tips of the trade from some of the best in the field. We launched our website www.dancemarathongc.org and made a YouTube video of the 2011 Event (click to watch).

August and September: With the new website came online access to the 2011-2012 Exec Board application and we were happy to add Abby, Ashley, Alan, and Eddie to the board! We ordered snazzy new "What will you stand for?" t-shirts (see Meredith and Hannah sport it here). We also received a special bonus during GC Songfest with Lauren speaking about the event and $1 from each ticket going to DMGC. We also had a shout out during the Homecoming Football game and are excited to get Alumni involved in the cause. We participated in the local Fireman's Chilli Cookoff in downtown Georgetown, supporting another great cause, Toys for Tots, and getting our name out to the community at the same time.

October: Lots to look forward to this month! Just a sneak peak....more DM Mondays, Wear it Wednesday's, a Dine to Donate on Wed Oct16th, and more! Check back often for updates, different Exec Board members will be writing each time to change up the style. Looking forward to March!

FTK,
Katie

Where's George? He's dancing...FOR THE KIDS!

Where's George? Dance Marathon Georgetown College

Introducing our latest promotional video featuring George the Tiger, the infamous mascot of Georgetown College. George can be seen doing his trademark dance move all over campus with students and professors alike. We're hoping that George will help spread awareness on campus and promote our April 1-2nd event!

In other exciting news, this Thursday at 6:00PM in Asher 112, Dance Marathon will be hosting a CEP/NEXUS event called "The Impact of Dance Marathon". A small panel will present on the impact of Dance Marathon on their schools and we will view several promo videos. Our Overall Chair will then discuss the potential effects this campaign could have on our campus.

Get excited!

Remember, FTK!

Throw away all your problems 'cause right now it's party time.

Hopefully you've heard already but in case you haven't, we had our FLASH MOB TODAY!
Today at 12:22 in the Caf, Chris Brown begins blaring over the speakers while hundreds of confused Georgetown students looked around waiting for the magic to happen. Approximately 40 dancers give it all they have in front of Mrs Joe's station dancing a choreographed routine to the song.
It. Was. Awesome.
The dancers were absolutely amazing! I want to thank each one of you so so so very much for your weeks of hard work. It definitely paid off!
After all of this commotion calms down, what is left? It is simple. Dance Marathon- For The Kids.
We all got in front of almost the entire school and danced around like fools for these kids (and I know so many of you are JEALOUS). This is your chance. This is your opportunity. Or, like me, you may see this as your call. These kids need us. They need our support. They need our donations. They NEED us to dance.
Please register for Dance Marathon TODAY! You will have an absolute blast and have the time of your life: TWO free tshirts, endless food, games, bands, and of course dancing.
Be anxiously awaiting the reveal of our Youtube video here in the next couple of days. Show it to all your friends. And once it becomes a youtube sensation, you can say I was THERE and personally witnessed this day in history.
For The Kids!

Until the cows come home...

I cannot believe that we are coming down to the wire for Dance Marathon 2011!

The Exec Board is working super hard to make sure this event is an absolute success. They have spent countless hours pulling their weight in this whole extravaganza. I am so grateful to work with each of them.

I saw something today that I wanted to share with you... There is a new YouTube video advertising for Dance Marathon as a whole. For us at Georgetown who have never been to a Dance Marathon before, this helps to give you a look as to what to expect in April. Absolute magical chaos! It is posted on the facebook page right now, so go check it out.

As time draws closer I feel my stomach swirl into knots because I simply cannot wait to see this event come together. However, this Exec Board can plan until the cows come home but if we don't have student participation, the event won't be nearly as exciting.

I know that Dance Marathon is new on campus. I know that taking a risk to join something brand new is weird and you are leaping into the unknown. But I can promise you this, you will NOT regret this decision. I encourage each of you to at least try it this year. The registration fee is small, plus you get free food and a sweet t-shirt. And if nothing else, it is a great resume builder ;)

After going on multiple leadership conferences, I know for a fact that people want an event to bring Georgetown kids together. A pep rally. A campus wide event to get everyone pumped up. Who doesn't love them some Georgetown?

So do it, right now. Register for Dance Marathon. Get your friends together and join as a group. I promise that this is a decision you will not regret.
